PODlife: Bringing the City to the Streets

by Adam Cornelius and Kaytea Petro

This proposal was created for the Urban Revision contest, ReRoute, which challenged designers to "Move people and things. Remove barriers and preconceptions. Unlock the city block."

PODlife seeks to go beyond just changing the way we transport and are transported. We also look to recreate cities through transforming infrastructure and zoning. We focus on minimizing driving and traffic congestion as a result of urban planning models, while encouraging efficient public transportation, walking, and biking in areas dense with a mix of commercial and residential spaces. We structure this infrastructure around urban pods that are healthy, and safe, and will facilitate a sense of community for its residents.

This redesign will help scale down both personal transit and commercial delivery systems. We envision bicycles and electric vehicles traversing the city far faster than large trucks to deliver shipments. And keeping the traditional city grid intact will allow this concept to translate to other cities, since little major retrofitting of blocks and streets will need to be done. Existing buildings can be rezoned to meet the needs of the new city.
